Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi, Ling Zhi) is known in China, Japan and Korea for more than 4 000 years. Latin "lucidum" means "shining" or "diamond", because mushroom’s cap has a varnished look. In China it is known as Ling Zhi (the mushroom of healing and immortality), in Japan - Reishi or mannentake (millennial mushroom). Knowledge of the Ganoderma lucidum properties was carried from generation to generation.
Since Yan (Yuan) dynasty (1280-1368 AD) This mushroom repeatedly depicted in paintings and drawings, jewelry, pitchers, carpets, etc. The earliest reference to Ling Zhi emerged during the first emperor of China, Shing-huang of the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC).
A little later, treatise "Shinnoh Honsohkyo" was written in Japan, which is considered an initial book about Eastern medicine. This treatise is mentioned 365 species of herbs and from them Reishi, along with Ginseng, defined as a «plant of God» for their abilities.
Medical use of Ganoderma lucidum in those days described for the following diseases: neurasthenia, exhaustion after a long illness, anorexia, chronic hepatitis, coronary heart disease, hypertension, bronchial cough, dizziness, insomnia, impotence.
There is an ancient legend about a poor orphan girl-Fu Lin, who had, also beauty and generosity, but even last trash cleaner in her home village did not wanted to marry her , because she didn’t had even the pair of not ripen sandals.
Fu Lin once dreamed that radiant young man with the white wings came down to her and said: "Water old dry plum tree, which stands at the pass two miles from the house of your hosts, and it will be commended to you ..."
She obeyed his advice, and started to get up each morning before daybreak, go to the spring, full a pitcher and grow fainting of difficult road and heavy pitcher, watered the old dry plum tree.
Villagers were making fun of the poor girl, and her masters were forced her to work more in order to discourage her from doing nonsense. But with every new morning, poor Fu Lin with the tears in her eyes went to the old Plum tree to water it.
And one day a miracle occurred -Reishi mushrooms densely germinated all over a bole of a dry plum tree. She knew the value of it -, There have been collectors of healing mushrooms in their village that have been hunting after Reishi for years and sell them in the city worth weight in gold.
Indeed, finding Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) in the wild was very difficult, as well as its healing properties incredibly appreciated, so its cost was expensive. Lucky collector of healing mushrooms, only once coming across on Reishi spawn, was able to live comfortably for many years, keeping a tree in secret, gathering his harvest every year and selling it to a Chinese court doctor.
Mystery of Reishi cultivation was discovered only in 1972 when a Japanese farmer, interested in healing mushrooms, after many experiments, was able to identify fungus culture and grow the first Reishi on his "mushroom farm".
